What is End of Life Doula

The word ‘doula ‘ – pronounced ‘doo-la ‘ – is a Greek word meaning assistant or care giver.

How can an End of Life Doula help?

For some death is indeed a theatre of change, marking the end of the physical life and the start of another, whilst others believe death is the end of their existence. One way or another, we are all facing the biggest unknown of all. An end of life doula can assist in multifaceted ways.

Monica is a very experienced, knowledgeable and kind person with decades of practical nursing experience. I participated in her course about End of Life issues in the spring of 2025, and found it really great. She showed us that while death comes to us all, it is a natural part of life; I like to say, “we all graduate”. We had a good group of about 12 participants in the course, and there was both a lot of discussion and listening. We learned that embracing some planning about wills, health directives and funeral arrangements helps keep things in perspective and prevents fear of death from ruling the day. Monica was our captain in navigating this thinking, and her practical knowledge and good-natured kindness won us all over. She is very good at caring for people and putting people at ease. You will not be sorry to work with Monica!

What began as simple curiosity turned into the realisation that this is a much bigger and more interesting subject than it first appears, and Monica guided that journey with insight and care, helping me uncover what I did not know I needed to know.

Monica’s course has made an enormous difference. It left me feeling genuinely prepared and far more confident about getting my affairs in order, and it covered exactly the topics I had been wanting to understand in a clear and accessible way . Her presentations were excellent—practical, honest and open—and the generous time she gave to questions and answers meant every topic was explored more deeply than expected, going above and beyond what a typical course offers.

The session was exceptionally well prepared and organised, and it opened up options that had never been considered before, especially the possibility of a gentle, natural funeral in the local area . The presenter was very professional and created a genuinely lovely experience, clearly explaining how wide the choices are and highlighting many aspects of funerals that I had not previously thought about.

Why "No strings Attached?"

Living “with no strings attached” in life can be compared to living with as few hidden obligations, unresolved issues, and unspoken expectations as possible. It is not about avoiding responsibility, but about consciously choosing what to commit to and making sure those commitments are clear, honest, and aligned with one’s values.

In a life sense, “strings” can look like unfinished business, unmade decisions, unclear boundaries, or things left unsaid with family and friends. Over time, these can weigh a person down, much like marks or flaws in a piece of fabric that only become obvious when you try to use it for something important. Living with fewer “strings” means gradually addressing these areas—putting legal and financial affairs in order, clarifying wishes around health and end‑of‑life care, and having open conversations with loved ones—so that life feels less tangled and more intentional.

This way of living is also a gift to others. When a person works through their “strings” during life, they reduce the practical and emotional burden on the people who love them. Loved ones are not left guessing about wishes, searching for documents, or struggling with unresolved conflict; instead, they receive the legacy of clarity, preparation, and peace. In that sense, a life lived with “no strings attached” is one where a person departs having done as much as possible to ease the path for those who remain.
